Mitch Fridolfson grew up in Humboldt. His mother worked as a secretary at a plumbing and electrical shop, and being around that world pulled him toward the trades. He studied electrical at ICCC, got his license, and in 2009 started North Central Iowa Service with one employee: himself.
He wasn't filling a market gap on a spreadsheet. He was watching his neighbors deal with contractors who didn't show up, juggling multiple companies for jobs that should have been handled by one, and calling numbers that went to voicemail at the worst possible hours. He knew he could do it differently, and he built the company around doing exactly that.
What NCIS became over 17 years isn't the result of a growth strategy. It's the result of adding a trade every time the community needed one, adding equipment when a customer had a problem nobody else would solve, and hiring people and training them the right way, alongside licensed tradespeople, not alone on a job site. Skid loaders, excavation equipment, generator installation, geothermal, a federally registered apprenticeship program: each one followed a real need, not a business plan.
Mitch's other businesses in Humboldt, North Central Iowa Properties and ACE Hardware, run on the same logic. You figure out what your community needs and you find a way to provide it. NCIS exists inside that same approach. A community deserves a company it can trust completely, across every system in the home or building, for as long as it needs it. That's the only reason this company exists, and it hasn't changed since 2009.
Today, NCIS is a team of 40 and growing. Mitch still holds a master's license in electrical, mechanical, and plumbing, which is what makes true in-house coordination across trades possible under one roof. And he still answers after-hours calls on his personal cell, not because it's a policy but because it's the standard he holds himself to, and it runs through the whole company.
